           As Jehovah’s Witnesses, we failed to learn the whole story behind the development of the 1914 doctrine, to check behind the ones who were perpetuating this teaching. We did not do what the Bereans did in checking the scriptures to determine whether this teaching was solidly backed up by the scriptures. We, in effect, followed an "artfully contrived story." (2 Peter 1:16) We could also be said to be "replying to a matter" before we heard the full story when we took this doctrine to the public. (Proverbs 18:13)
