           The Greek word "ainigmati" means a riddle or an enigma. Paul was indicating that when first century Christians made application of Hebrew prophesies to themselves, they were faced with many riddle or enigmas. They did not fully understand these prophecies and how they would be completely fulfilled. Their application was merely a ‘placebo" that is, it appeared, on the surface, that they had a correct understanding but when digging deeper, one was left with many unanswered questions or with events that did not completely fit the prophecy.
