In Jesus’ day, due to the fanaticism of the Pharisees, the Jews refused to have any association with Gentiles or tax collectors believing these ones to be unclean and by their association with them, they would become unclean. They would therefore not make any effort to help them in any way. If Jesus had advocated this course, then he would have been going against his own words recorded at Matthew 5:43-47.
