         John could not have been the ‘Elijah’ that Jesus was speaking about because his ministry lasted only some six months or more and there is nothing recorded that show that he restored first century Israel. In fact, when he was asked if he was "Elijah," he denied it. (John 1:21) But the Bible does show that Jesus did perform a restoration work towards first century Israel at that time but he did not claim to be "Elijah."
