         Constantius I told the Christians that they could only remain in his service if they agreed to "sacrifice to idols." If they refused to do this then they would suffer vengeance at his hands. By doing this, he wanted to identify those who would never compromise their loyalty. Constantius reasoned that if a person remained loyal to Jehovah even under threat of death, he would also be loyal to him.
