         When Rehoboam ascended the throne, Israel asked him to relieve them of some of the burdens that had been laid upon them by his father, Solomon. When he refused to do so, but bragged that he would make their burdens even heavier, ten of the twelve tribes revolted against him and later chose Jeroboam to be their king.
