John’s ministry of repentance was carried out in the wilderness because the nation of Israel had become apostate and needed to repent so that they could be saved. It was Jehovah’s will that John be a prophet who spoke from the wilderness, a place that was outside the camp of apostate Israel. Those who were repentant would then leave the apostate nation and go out to the wilderness to the prophet where they would openly confess their sins. (Mark 1:4, 5)
